The Flip Camera is No More
Luckily, the Media Commons has been exploring a move to iOS devices for mobile video recording (and editing and photography and research and ARGs, and…) because the latest news from Cisco could have been devastating. The networking company has decided it no longer actually wants to be into consumer electronics and is nixing the popular Flip line. Since our standard Media Commons model is almost entirely based on Flip cameras at the moment, this will certainly force us to move even more quickly towards an iOS-flavored future. Just glad we’ve already started the groundwork…
I’m a little sad (nostalgic) about this decision. Flip cameras were cool for their time. But now that there are cameras on iOS devices – and those devices do so much more than just record video, I couldn’t see myself buying another Flip camera in the future.
So yes, I’m very happy that Media Commons is looking into iPod Touches as the new devices for video. I’m looking forward to seeing how that pilot turns out.
It’s definitely the end of an era and I’m now curious to see when the last Flip camera will fall (and which campus it will be housed at when it happens) – but I’m also excited to get started on a new chapter in easy, mobile video production!
