Architecture

Completion

All boxes are unpacked.  All books shelved.  All floors vacuumed.  All curtains hung.  It’s an incredibly relaxing feeling and I’m pretty pleased with how it’s turned out.

For those of you who can’t see Flickr’s Flash-tactic player, the set is here.

Well, I’m here

Kate and I met the movers at my current abode here in State College on Wednesday morning after racing up through the twisty, confounding backroads that Google had chosen for us near Lancaster.  The three man crew made a mockery of every moving attempt I’ve ever undertaken (thirteen as of this one) and got everything plopped in roughly the right spot within three hours.  Wegman’s was visited, Target was repeatedly purchased-from and a mountain of cardboard and packing paper (seriously, guys – that much?!) has been trickling out to the dumpster.  I will theoretically have more to add soon, but it’s all been a rush and I can’t believe I’m actually here again.  Surreal, for sure but not uncomfortable by any means.

Here’s a photo of the living room thus far.  Books and trinkets will be unboxed tomorrow:

Wear the room

The gays over at Tom & Lorenzo have turned their wit and fashionable eyes towards designer Mary Katrantzou. afro her Spring 2011 collection, Katrantzou was not just inspired by amazing examples of architecture – she turned her models into walking representations of it. Behold the lampshade skirt, the curtain scarf and the flower arrangement armband! I’m a fan, how about you?

The set of your next Clive Owen film

Apparently this is Gagra, on the Black Sea. According to io9, it used to be a Soviet resort town until military action and political instability brought it to the edge of ruin. Now it just sits there, beckoning a director to make it the backdrop for her next post-apocalyptic summer blockbuster.

The best of yesteryear

I have just recently been reminded (again) of the existence of Retro Thing. This time via Engadget’s posting of a vintage 1983 Sony CD stereo review. Not just a collection of funny old verbiage about dead and dying gizmos, there are also some really artsy and thought-provoking artifacts. Take this video of San Francisco from the 1958:

San Francisco 1958 from Jeff Altman on Vimeo.

Of course, it doesn’t hurt that they are leading with an article with the Lego Architect Fallingwater set – which I may or may not have received for Xmas.

I need this

Cameron’s house from Ferris Bueller’s Day Off is for sale. Remember? With the Ferrari that careens out of the garage and into a ravine? That one. This one.

Cameron's House

I want this house bad. It’s gorgeous and still entirely contemporary in its mid-century retrofuturistic style. The furniture is even passable, though with a decór overhaul and few upgrades – namely, some better windows as I’m betting 1953 was not the most eco-friendly of times – this would be one flash tree house. I’d spend most of my time in that garage, of course…

(Thanks, Uncrate.)
