I hope this is a new feature

Jalopnik is a perennial favorite car blog read every day for me. I was delighted to see that they had a piece by Peter Orosz (of Hyperleggera fame) today under the heading of “Design Deconstructed.” The first case study was the 2010 Acura ZDX (a schizophrenic car if I’ve ever seen one.) I enjoyed reading what was essentially the same sort of autistic deconstruction of a motoring form that I myself often force upon the unlucky (Kate.) What most people see as nothing more than an appliance can send me through hundreds of words of compare and contrast. It was truly wonderful to read some else’s similar exploration – especially since I wouldn’t have necessarily chosen the same comparison cars. I’d love to see more Design Deconstructed breakdowns of today’s vehicles.

Here’s hoping it’s a recurring feature, Jalopnik!

I need this

Cameron’s house from Ferris Bueller’s Day Off is for sale. Remember? With the Ferrari that careens out of the garage and into a ravine? That one. This one.

Cameron's House

I want this house bad. It’s gorgeous and still entirely contemporary in its mid-century retrofuturistic style. The furniture is even passable, though with a decór overhaul and few upgrades – namely, some better windows as I’m betting 1953 was not the most eco-friendly of times – this would be one flash tree house. I’d spend most of my time in that garage, of course…

(Thanks, Uncrate.)

90s Video

On my way back from seeing X-Men Origins: Wolverine with Owen and Kristin (don’t see it – it was a last minute idea and probably not such a good film) I heard one of my favorite Depeche Mode songs, “Enjoy the Silence” and it has sent Kate and I down a very new wave rabbit hole. Not that we aren’t always on the edge of one anyway.

A video for you to enjoy:

It seems Depeche Mode pulled this video from YouTube. However, there’s a QuickTime version on their website that looks better anyway.

Who wants to buy me tickets for the Nissan Pavilion show in July?

St. Patsy’s Day

St. Patsy's Day

To celebrate the passing of Joanna Lumley’s 63rd birthday – a holiday that shall henceforth be known as St. Patsy’s Day, and fall on the closest Friday to Ms. Lumley’s actual birthday – I created this composite image. It builds upon an actual Daily Mail article’s headline and depicts what it might have been like if Patsy had gone to the Arctic instead. Which is how I read it in my mind, anyway.

War on Lego Terror

Digg tipped me off to this great collection of images from Flickr user, Legofesto. Each photo is of Lego recreations of news headlines from the war on terror in Iraq. If you could say something is a “favorite” out of such subject matter, I’d have to choose this:

The little Lego grins are what really get me.

You can see more by visiting Legofesto’s photostream. It seems like an ongoing project, so check back often.

Dance, dance, dance.

My sister recently cleaned up big time with her dance company at the Pennsylvania Dance Masters competition, so I waned to offer up some congratulations here! And share a photo:

Hannah, second from the right, looking fierce. And deranged.

I was not fortunate enough to be there, but evidently this performance was about a mother letting go of her daughter to a dangerous world. Which would explain the hair and makeup.

It also ties in nicely with a conversation I was having with Kate over dinner about a book I just read. In a chapter of 334 by Disch, the narrative follows a group of affluent dancing teenagers hellbent on defining their own reality in a 1970s depiction of the future. I thought it would fit nicely with a paper Kate is working on…

…and seems to be elegantly depicted in this new video by The Presets. I caught “If I Know You” right after having said conversation and looking at Hannah’s dance pictures.

Strange how things fall into line like that.

3G?

I spent yesterday evening in Philadelphia where I saw Ladytron and The Faint at the Trocadero Theatre. The show was excellent and dinner before at Penang on 10th Street in Chinatown (it was featured on Israel’s Top Chef, apparently) was even better (there was a Buddhist monk dining beside us!)

What’s more interesting is that, while looking up what rambutan fruit was, I decided I’d turn on my iPhone’s 3G. Normally, I leave it off as the Eastern Shore is the land that time forgot. Or so I thought – after arriving back, the little 3G indicator would not go away. A quick look at AT&T’s coverage map shows that the entirety of the Eastern Shore is 3G (where service is available, that is.) How neat!

Where was my memo on this one? “Dear Eastern Shore customers…”

Like Top Gear on Acid

(which is actually probably rather like regular Top Gear, but I digress)

Paranoia und Verschwörung in Bayern

All I can gather from this is that a Hungarian journalist had his camera confiscated while touring the BMW plant in Germany – after which, he totally lost it and decided to create a short story illustrated with crayon. It is magnificent.

My mom is awesome

Sometimes my mom amazes me. She received this email from me in July:

Subject: Do you think you can…

Body: …make something like this?

Prada Sweater

With no instructions, no patterns and only a screen grab of the front of the sweater, my mom completely and totally knocked off a $550 Prada design. Go Mom!
