Today’s Lyrics

I woke up in a pretty good mood today and, rather out of the blue, began mulling these lyrics over and over in my mind. I share them with you now, no?

You are my autoharp
I push every button on your body
I push the a minor, the e flat, the f major
And especially the c sharp 7

You are my autoharp
I play every string in your mind
And even when I play them very loud
They keep in tune
But how will they sound soon

You are my autoharp
I bought you in a pawnshop in Virginia
You were cheap but in good condition
Longing for someone to take you on an exotic trip

You are my autoharp
I carried you all over the world
In my hard case called the heart
You’re the reason for my blood to keep running
Through my veins every album again

“Autoharp” by Hooverphonic

Shoot…

Who knew that dancing could actually be fun? Not I.

Last night was MEN with Hey Willpower at the Black Cat in DC and it was essentially a total dance party of the highest magnitude. MEN, for those that may not know, is 2/3 of Le Tigre and it’s basically JD and Jo playing whatever they want from their computers and dancing about in cape-lets. Backing up a bit, though…

We got to DC around 9:00 and Shannon led Kate and I to “Jumbo Slice,” a by the slice pizza place that does not falsely advertise (and get right to the point with naming.) We then rolled over to the venue, figuring we’d be late since doors opened at 9:00. However, we got upstairs to find we were the only people there save for a few merch sellers, the bartender and the coat check dude. “Well, they must be starting soon…” thought we as we swilled vodka tonics and Jack and Cokes.

Hey Willpower took the stage at 11:00.

Oddly, though, with some prompting from Kate and a quick lesson I was dancing sober. And by the time MEN took the stage, I was dancing sober up front. Though Kate had more fun by far. Her worried look of “oh, shit…how am I going to pull this event off” disappeared and was replaced by a giant smile. She even took the stage with Shannon to dance with JD and Jo themselves.

It was pretty much awesome. Kind of like hanging out with the band and 100 of their close friends. JD’s girlfriend, the wonderful Sia (who was playing DC last night, too), came with drinks and Hey Willpower was just sorta playing around in the control booth and talking to random people throughout the night. Kate even got to talk to JD as she bought one of their shirts – “MEN ARE DJS,” written in tiny women’s symbols.

So yeah. Fun times…totally would do again. And definitely getting behind the idea of DJ shows after being indoctrinated with Jus†ice at the Trocadero. (Thanks, Dusty!)

Concert Updatin’

Seriously, you haven’t quite lived until you’ve seen Fiona Apple perform “Criminal” as a bluegrass song. Probably one of the high points of my concert-going career (ranking somewhere near the very opening of the Cleveland of Montreal show.) She was weird, awkward and probably insane/high but god can this woman sing. And she’s adorable, like your geeky 14 year old sister and your grandmother all rolled into one. In all, I’d recommend catching this tour if you can.

Tonight, tonight…

Fiona Apple concert in Baltimore. Pray I don’t get pulled over (again) on the way there.

Yes, I got pulled over last night but I walked off with only a warning. 35 in a 25…woo-boy, thank you for keeping the roads safe, Maryland Trooper. Where were you when some ghetto-shmuck tossed a beer bottle at my moving car? Or when every retard in this town drives in the left lane/goes 10 in a 35/turns left on red with no signal? I suppose he thought “Well, there goes a drunk frat boy…I’ll get to use my fancy breathalyzer!” because when I rolled down the window with my license, registration and good, sober attitude at the ready you could almost hear his little police-y heart sink. Sorry, dude.

But yeah, I’m pretty excited for this concert since I’ve wanted to see Fiona since I was 14 and an angry high school-er. And I get to see Baltimore with Kate, which I’ve wanted to do since I went to the American Visionary a few months ago. AND, Sarah is going and she’s Fiona’s No. 1 fan, so that means it’s like a religious pilgrimage almost. 🙂

Completely in love with these lyrics right now…

She’s the face on the radio
She’s the body on the morning show
She’s there shaking it out on the scene
She’s the colour of a magazine
And she’s in fashion
She’s in fashion

She’s employed where the sun don’t set
And she’s the shape of a cigarette
And she’s the shake of a tambourine
And she’s the colour of a magazine
And she’s in fashion
And she’s in fashion

Oh and if she tells you 2 is 1
then 2 is 1 my love,
Oh and if she tells you, you should know,
then you should know my love,

She is strung out on a TV dream
And she’s the taste of gasoline
And she’s as similar as you can get
To the shape of a cigarette
And she’s in fashion
And she’s in fashion

“She’s In Fashion” – (The London) Suede

And on the 8th day…

…Nick gave us a new blog post. There was much celebration and feasting. (Really, it was a pretty kick ass time.)

Similarly, Hoover’s was all kinds of enjoyable. It may have taken Lindsie and I forever to actually get there (her moreso than myself), but it was well worth the journey. Dusty has a stupendously embarassing video of me playing Wii boxing. I’ve not seen it yet, but I have a feeling it’s going to be linked soon. And I’m paying the price for said video with an entire body of sore muscles. Freaking Nintendo…disguising exercise as gaming! WarioWare with Lindsie was guaranteed hilarity and just being with everyone was great fun. We were obnoxious and loud everywhere we went, just as it should have been. I’m really excited to have everyone down when winter goes away so we can have a weekend at the beach. And probably lots of drinks since that’s what we do. Hoover, you are packing the Wii for maximum entertainment…Dusty, you bring the whiskey. I’ll have blankets, I swear…

Tonight is Of Montreal! Yay-ness. Dusty is confident that the snow is going to relent before our intended departure time and I’m hoping this is correct. Amanda and Brent are traveling along tonight, too, which is very exciting. Keep your fingers crossed that all goes well.

Sonya’s End of Time Mix

So I got bored while I was at Lindsie’s for my grad school tours (she’s not a bad hostess…she was just at work while I was in her apartment) and decided to make Sonya a mix CD. I figured it was appropriate because we spend so much of our time asking when the world is just going to end and leave us alone. I liked it so much, though, that I thought I’d share with everyone!

    The tracklist:

  1. “Apocalypse Please” – Muse
  2. “The Day the World Went Away” – Nine Inch Nails
  3. “Empty House” – Air
  4. “Detective Daughter” – Emilie Haines & The Soft Skeleton
  5. “Hard as a Stone” – A-Camp
  6. “Meds (featuring Alison Mosshart)” – Placebo
  7. “Affliction” – AFI
  8. “The Weight of the World” – Her Space Holiday
  9. “Nothing” – Depeche Mode
  10. “Broken Drum (Boards of Canada Remix)” – Beck

The entire album is available here for your listening enjoyment, but only for a limited time, Hoover. (~50 MB, mp3)

Download cover art as a PDF if you’d like to burn a copy.

My sentiments exactly…

Ice-age heat wave, can’t complain.
If the world’s at large, why should I remain?
Walked away to another plan.
Gonna find another place, maybe one I can stand.
I move on to another day,
to a whole new town with a whole new way.
Went to the porch to have a thought.
Got to the door and again, I couldn’t stop.
You don’t know where and you don’t know when.
But you still got your words and you got your friends.
Walk along to another day.
Work a little harder, work another way.

Well uh-uh baby I ain’t got no plan.
We’ll float on maybe would you understand?
Gonna float on maybe would you understand?
Well float on maybe would you understand?

The days get shorter and the nights get cold.
I like the autumn but this place is getting old.
I pack up my belongings and I head for the coast.
It might not be a lot but I feel like I’m making the most.
The days get longer and the nights smell green.
I guess it’s not surprising but it’s spring and I should leave.

I like songs about drifters – books about the same.
They both seem to make me feel a little less insane.
Walked on off to another spot.
I still haven’t gotten anywhere that I want.
Did I want love? Did I need to know?
Why does it always feel like I’m caught in an undertow?

The moths beat themselves to death against the lights.
Adding their breeze to the summer nights.
Outside, water like air was great.
I didn’t know what I had that day.
Walk a little farther to another plan.
You said that you did, but you didn’t understand.

I know that starting over is not what life’s about.
But my thoughts were so loud I couldn’t hear my mouth.
My thoughts were so loud I couldn’t hear my mouth.
My thoughts were so loud.

“The World at Large” by Modest Mouse

Remind me to fucking stab Steve Jobs…

My hard drive is seriously making me insane. All I’m trying to do is get everything into one nice, tidy image before I get my new drive and toss this corrupted, corroded, crap-tastic pile of platters into the trash. However, it’s not going into the night without a struggle. Tonight’s battleground: iTunes. Apparently, random tracks are going to be corrupted one by one and I’ll only know which are junk as my iPod tries to absorb them during autosync. So far, “High Times” by Jamiroquai, “Dividing Island” by Lansing Dreiden and “Rexall” by Dave Navarro have fallen victim to its evil ways. Nothing quite like reimporting a whole album just for one track, eh?

*gah* Further compounding this annoyance is the fact that I accidentally ordered the wrong drive (ATA-6 vs. SATA) and will have to wait until at least Tuesday before I can swap it out. What else will go wrong?

Update: Now my fucking iPod is acting like it can’t start up and will only work properly when connected to the computer. UGH!
