I’ll give you novel

This is certainly a unique way to make electronic devices feel more like traditional media. Not 100% into the idea of bending a display to navigate, but you can see the promise of adding another gestural interaction to our bag of tricks.

Incredible oddness

Areas affected by the hovering area comprised the entire “Other” demographic in the 2010 Census, exceeding every socio-economic grouping for highest suicide rates. This means whoever is unlucky enough to stumble upon this 12” x 12” area will almost certainly commit suicide (though will be privy, some say, to unreasonably clear WiFi reception before dying).

Amber sent me the most amazing link this evening. Entitled “Most Depressing WiFi Hotspots in Baltimore, MD“, it is the most sublime bit of inexplicable writing.  Go read now!

1 point to YouTube commenter

In this product showcase from Corning – that io9 has dubbed “creepy” – we are presented with a world that benefits largely from the ubiquitous integration of touch-enable data displays integrated into every day glass surfaces. It’s beautiful and I want to live in this version of the future, but I think the first YouTube commenter summed up a nagging feeling in the back of my mind best:

BUY STOCK IN WINDEX NOW!!!

Aside from the impossibly clean houses, cars and public spaces that Corning seems to envision, I am also curious about how we are powering more and more screens at bigger and bigger sizes.  How are we producing all of this glass and where?  And who has access to the technology aside from the conspicuously diverse group of under 40s actors who portrayed “the near future”.

They may always end up as fodder for Paleofuture, but these videos sure do encapsulate the nearly Utopian dreams of our modern society, don’t they?

Link art

Well, we now know how one might translate some of Danielewski‘s zanier ideas into a tangible paper book.

What you are seeing here is an amazing, handmade German art book called Thoughts on Dreams that has been threaded with hyperlinks to direct readers from one important section to another.  It is sublime.  I also love how it really illustrates the idea of interconnected content in a way that does, actually, look like a sinewy spider’s web or neural network.

Clearly, yes

From “Are we taking evolution into our own hands?“:

Today we continue to live the same process, but in an enormously accelerated fashion. For better and worse we are transforming ourselves from a Homo sapiens, a species aware of its environment, into a Homo evolutis, a species that directly and deliberately begins to control its own evolution, as well as that of many other species.

I’d add that we are now a species that can directly and indirectly alter the evolution and survival of the entire planet – and have been for decades.

Must stop forgetting

I promised myself at some point in the past year or so that I’d stop forgetting the Paleofuture blog I love so much.  (Yeah, that worked out.)  While I wasn’t watching this time, the creator decided to start putting together video montages on specific topics related to the world of tomorrow.  Upshot to just realizing this now:  not one but two videos to get started – one on food, one on the apocalypse.

(Did anyone else hear Orson Welles say “nuke-u-ler”?)

BMW does films

I love it when BMW goes to the movies.  I’m sure you remember their 2001-2002 films starring Clive Owen – most notably “Star” with Madonna in the backseat of an M5.  Proving what a difference a decade makes, the newest series of BMW videos, “Wherever You Want To Go,” will be focusing on the future of mobility.  From really expensive productions about the BMW lifestyle…to basically the same thing but about green technology and human scale transportation solutions.   Anyway, it should be a lot of fun and the videos will be released all throughout February, beginning on the 1st.
