From our minds to screen

Well, this could certainly revolutionize videomaking in the (somewhat distant) future.  My mind is reeling – I wonder how visually – at the idea of simply thinking of the film you’d like to produce and having it produced from the raw thought-source.  Now, we just need to get cracking on doing the same for audio so that our brain masterpieces can have a kickin’ score…

The discreet charm of Sean Young

We spent this morning talking about how totally amazing actress Sean Young is after I stumbled across some candid photos she had posted to her website from the set of Blade Runner. (io9)

The fact that this could easily be a photo of my fiancée does not elude me…

Kate pointed out to me that the movie that got her into cryptozoology as a child was actually one that starred Ms Young (as a mokele-mbembe protecting paleontologist, no less).  We both lamented the fact that a broken arm kept her out of Batman and her insane antics – while endearing – kept her down in Hollywood.  I’m reminded of a recent Entertainment Weekly piece on her unfailing belief in an imminent comeback.  Regardless of whether she gets another break into stardom, she’ll always have played some crush-worthy sci-fi characters and is an icon to this household.

Watch: Abduction trailer

I’m not necessarily endorsing the new film Abduction but I did want to point out this trailer. Some of you might remember that Kate’s parents’ neighborhood was recently set upon by hordes of teenaged girls because a certain teen-wolf was living there. Well, this movie is the reason for that mob of spotty trollops as it was filmed in and around their streets. Now you know!

An ancient relic

David Herbert’s 2005 sculpture/monolith VHS is an 8-foot-tall video cassette copy of Stanley Kubrick’s 2001. What does this piece mean? I’m not entirely sure, but I’m just going to assume it’s an audacious statement against Betamax.

BMW does films

I love it when BMW goes to the movies.  I’m sure you remember their 2001-2002 films starring Clive Owen – most notably “Star” with Madonna in the backseat of an M5.  Proving what a difference a decade makes, the newest series of BMW videos, “Wherever You Want To Go,” will be focusing on the future of mobility.  From really expensive productions about the BMW lifestyle…to basically the same thing but about green technology and human scale transportation solutions.   Anyway, it should be a lot of fun and the videos will be released all throughout February, beginning on the 1st.

Watch: Love Trailer

Rock group Angels & Airwaves’ Tom DeLonge (formerly of Blink 182) produced and created the music for the spacey film Love. The movie’s about a astronaut stuck alone on a space station, and the visuals are remarkable.

And they are – io9 nails it.  To quote them again:

Plus, the music is pretty gripping (something I was earlier dreading when I first read of A&A’s involvement, I was wrong it’s lovely).

And it is…and I did, too.  I really don’t like Angels & Airwaves all that much (though the visuals for their first single, “The Adventure” – oddly, set in space – did allow me to partake for a viewing or two) but this soundtrack (if the trailer is to be believed) is sublime.

I wish I could set my blog posts to remind me about things because I want to remember to see this movie.  Perhaps a new plugin to research?  I also really should finish Moon, I’m realizing…

Okay, Syfy

I have been rather despondent over the transformation of the SciFi Channel into this abomination that is Syfy. It wasn’t so bad at first but then the cancelations began. Namely, the axing of Caprica which I moaned about earlier. Then SGU – a canceled Stargate series at that! Most recently it was the inclusion of increasingly ridiculous shows more akin to TLC (also a disappointment as a network lately). Take WCG Ultimate Gamer, the plethora of Ghost Hunters or WWE wrestling as examples.

My excitement, then, over the promo for Face Off is ludicrously boundless. A show that, while not strictly science fiction, at least features the world of making science fiction as it searches for the next great makeup artist. PLEASE DON’T SCREW THIS ONE UP, SYFY!
